(contrary to a previous report, the government has no say in this matter, but they do support the QMJHL in having this vote)

The news came from twitter yesterday morning, but the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League will vote today to ban fighting from the league which operates within the province of Quebec (also in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island).

La @LHJMQ se prononcera sur l’interdiction des bagarres demain. J’appuie cette initiative. La ligue est un partenaire précieux dans la mise en place d’un milieu sportif sain et sécuritaire et cette décision confirmera son leadership.

— Isabelle Charest (@IsabelleCharest) February 19, 2020

The English translation of the tweet says:

“The @LHJMQ will vote on the ban on fighting tomorrow. I support this initiative. The league is a valuable partner in the establishment of a healthy and safe sports environment and this decision will confirm its leadership.”

The news comes with not much facts around it and definitely a lot less clarity as to what a vote to ban fighting would mean for the league which is currently still playing out it’s regular season.

Former QMJHL player, Mathieu Olivier has spoken up saying he would like to see players (former and otherwise) get a voice at the table, and definitely not have something like this in the hands of only league officials.

Mes pensées sur l’interdiction des bagarres dans la LHJMQ pic.twitter.com/FpNliozpTT

— Mathieu Olivier (@mattolivier24) February 19, 2020

Questions abound from this decision, how will it affect the league currently. Why didn’t they make a rule change instead of the government coming over the top? How would this play out in the Memorial Cup tournament where the QMJHL teams play against the WHL and OHL teams.

As the decision comes down the pipeline, we will be sure to update.

So, earlier this week I penned (with internet ink) a piece about how the Battle of Alberta is pushing to be the best rivalry in the NHL currently. I don’t think I could have even imagined a more exciting fourth installment than what we had last night.

The Edmonton Oilers headed into Calgary Flames country with visions of a Dave Rittich “bat flip” at the end of Wednesday night’s game dancing in their heads:

The game started with two goals for the Oilers in the first three minutes. You had the sense of the old Battle of Alberta being back. The physical intensity was missing though. That didn’t last long as towards the end of the first period Jujhar Khaira and Buddy Robinson (both players who were brought in for Wednesday’s BoA) had a spirited tilt:

And then things just began to build from there. The goals they started flying, and once the game hit 6-3 Oilers, the powder keg was primed for explosion.

Sam Gagner (in his 53rd game against the Calgary Flames) dove after a seemingly loose puck on then goalie, Cam Talbot and all hell broke loose. First we had Ethan Bear and Matthew Tkachuk (who after fighting Zack Kassian on Wednesday night has doubled his fight total for the year):

MIKE SMITH VS CAM TALBOT

This game seemed to have it all. Tons of goals, big saves, physicality and yes, goalie fights. The only true shame is that we have to wait until April 4th for the next Battle of Alberta.

But I think we can all agree, the best thing for the NHL this year might just be a first round matchup between these two teams.

At the start of this season, you may remember I came to you on these very hallowed pages and called the San Jose Sharks and Vegas Golden Knights rivalry the best one going right now. Well, two scrappy teams from Alberta have given me some pause for thought.

The best rivalry in the NHL right now?

Don’t get me wrong, the San Jose Sharks and Vegas Golden Knights is still a fun series to watch and I believe that they are still at the top but the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers have entered the arena of relevancy once again with a couple of spirited affairs that date back to the last game of the 2019 regular season.

For those of you who weren’t aware:

Initial X-ray results look good for Connor McDavid, will have MRI on Sunday

The Oilers won the game, but their captain (and for their former GM Peter Chiarelli’s efforts, their whole team) went down with a pretty significant knee injury. That knee injury that was just revealed as possibly far worse than originally thought, this week in a documentary that has aired in Canada and will make it’s way to the US on NBC February 18th:

Thrilled to announce the "Connor McDavid: Whatever It Takes" will have it's US Premiere on @NBCSN on February 18th. pic.twitter.com/Xn17qttmlR

The fires have been building since then and when the schedule came out, it turned out the first Battle of Alberta wouldn’t happen until the end of December. That actually wasn’t the worst thing for the rivalry as since that December 27th game (in which the Flames decimated the Oilers) the two teams have played each other two more times (Jan 11th – 3-2 CGY win and Jan 29th – 4-3 CGY SO win) and a fourth match-up is not too far away with the two playing in Calgary this Saturday night.

Kassian / Tkachuk

To find the start of the Tkachuk/Kassian was some bad blood born in a game back on November 17th, 2018 when Zack Kassian and Matthew Tkachuk got into it and Tkachuk was first accused of “Turtling” by the Oilers fan base:

As I mentioned before, the Giordano/McDavid incident kept things going into the offseason and then on January 11th, Matthew Tkachuk again drew the ire of Kassian and co. with a couple of hits that the hockey community deemed within the rules, but dangerous nonetheless:

Matthew Tkachuk Zack Kassian#HfHits

Following hit #2, Kassian went off:

Wow pic.twitter.com/Y0bgol0uu3

And then media, players and everyone in between spent two weeks, and change talking about a whole litany of issues and topics:

Tkachuk on Kassian: ‘If he doesn’t want to get hit, then stay off the tracks.’

Does the code in hockey still exist?

Are blindside hits the most dangerous play in hockey?

Should Kassian be suspended? (he was, for two games)

Will they or won’t they go in the next game?

And as to that last point, we got our answer in the form of two fights last night.

About Last Night

I don’t know if I can remember a game in the last few years at least where you were expecting so much from a physicality side of hockey. Basically a nightmare for Bettman.

I’d love to find someone with a tweet/text or something that predicted it was going to be Sean Monahan and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to be the first fight of the night.

Sean Monahan vs Ryan Nugent-Hopkins — 16:11 of the 1st period

In what would turn out to be the “better” (as rated by the fans) fight of the night, Monahan (1 fight) and Nugent-Hopkins (3 fights) would turn in a spirited bout.

Then, less than 30 seconds later, Tkachuk and Kassian lined up at the faceoff dot for the second time that night (The first time looks like Tkachuk wanted to go and Kassian turned him down):

Matthew Tkachuk vs Zack Kassian — 16:36 of the 1st period

This fight was just a good thing to see from Tkachuk, who to his credit, took a fight against a guy in Kassian who is the far superior pugilist of the two. He answered the bell for his hits previously and all should be good on that end…

Who’s Next?

Except, as Kassian was leaving the ice cameras caught Zac Rinaldo (career fights for Rinaldo) from the Flames bench with a couple of words for the man:

I don’t know if this is indeed the best rivalry in hockey overall right now, but I can tell you for certain I know I’ll be tuned in to Saturday’s rematch of these two teams and for a possible Zac on Zack attack of sorts.

The knock out punch. They can come at anytime, depending on the situation, and they almost always get the same reaction. Shock, awe and concern for the knocked out party.

That was no more evident last Saturday in the AHL game between the Bakersfield Condors and the Stockton Heat. The 19-year-old Calgary Flames prospect, Martin Pospisil went looking for a dance partner in Edmonton Oilers 24-year-old Colby Cave. The fight that ensued was a spirited back and forth battle until the product of North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Cave caught Pospisil and knocked him out.

Colby Cave vs Martin Pospisil – October 19th, 2019

If you’re reading this article, you probably have seen the KO but linked above is the whole fight.

The reason for this article is not so much to re-live the knock out, as it is to pay respect to both guys for what they did/have done since.

As I have written before, sometimes you’re the guy who gets caught:

Open letter to Andrei Svechnikov

Whether that is from a fight, or from an open ice hit on an unsuspecting player, the message is the same, take time to recover (whatever that means for you personally) and get back to it.

Pospisil was up and tweeting the next day about the fight and he only had good things to say about it, as his fellow dance partner reached out to make sure he was ok:

What a great guy @Cavemn10 I don’t remember anything What happened last night.. so That’s Good. Looking foward for rematch… #Whatdoesntkillyoumakesyoustronger pic.twitter.com/8uKNpFpAIL

— Martin Pospisil (@mpospisil91) October 20, 2019

That is a great thing to see because at the end of the day, no one wants to see anyone hurt. The whole play from top to bottom is a show of that.

Cave can be immediately seen as concerned for Pospisil’s well being.

The trainer of the Condors came out onto the ice on his own accord to see if there was anything that could be done to help the Heat’s own trainer.

Then to cap it all off, Cave reaches out to see if Pospisil is ok, and Martin himself is already rearing to go again and get back on the ice.

You love to see it. The toughness to answer the bell, and the respect afterwards.

It’s an undercurrent that is building among the leagues and the debate of the reasons behind it will continue on. Today the ECHL’s new rule this season came to light. Every time a player hits 10 fights in the season (of which there were 18 players last year) they will be suspended for one game.

ECHL Rule 23.7 has major changes for 2019-20:

When players reach 10 fighting majors they are suspended for one game. Each subsequent fighting major will be a one game suspension. At 14 fighting majors the suspension becomes two games.

FYI, 18 players had 10+ fights in 2018-19.

— ECHL Stats (@EchlStats) September 24, 2019

As the tweet/rule says, if you eclipse 14 fights in the season, each additional fight will be a two game suspension.

In the NHL, there has been a clear directive (in my opinion, allegedly) in the last year/two years to have linesmen interrupt the fight if there is even a slight opening.

Examples from this preseason alone:

Haley vs Stewart

Kaut vs Seeler

From where I blog, I would imagine that this rule change really won’t stop much from the true fighters in the league. One game/two games? Well worth.

At the end of the day, hockey players are adults and as the science continues to roll out, we respect those who continue to police the game and maintain the code. It’s been a point of frustration to our followers all over the social media, but what do you think about the move?

As we patiently await Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Final between the Bruins and the Blues, we have been bantering around the hockeyfights table what to do with the dog days of summer when there is even less fighting than this year’s playoffs, somehow. Then the idea hit us, BRACKETS, and then we thought back to the rage I (Nation Dan) created when I tried to give a smattering of every kind of fighter imaginable.

Then we took to the airwaves and found a couple of new partners in podcasting and in general and we partnered up with @4thlinevoice. In them we brought in the foremost voice of brackets for top fighters of all-time and with it, a new bracket is born. Much better run, and less upsetting to you the fans here at Hockeyfights.com.

As well, with the new format of Hockeyfights.com we have been able to tease down our data in the back end and will be bringing you the top 100 fights of 2018-19 (and that will be any fight we clipped over the last calendar year) as well as the Top 100 NHL fights of all-time, ranked by you the fans as a countdown to the 2019-20 season.

Hockeyfights.com is proud to be your source for all the fights of yesteryear and the place where you can come and see today’s fighters and players too.

To see the brackets and the top 100s make sure you follow us on all the social media channels you can.
